Midas Safety has invested close to US$12 million over the last five years to move towards renewable energy production and waste recycling.
Renewable Energy Production
We generate and use 223 million KWH of renewable energy every year. This saves:
• 20,805 tons of fuel oil (63,000 tons of CO2)
• 15,768 tons of natural gas (45,000 tons of CO2) or 32,850 tons of coal
Creating energy from renewable biomass is part of our efforts and accounts for 90% of our energy consumption in Sri Lanka. The Sawdust/Gliricidia and rubberwood we use save 3.9 million gallons of imported fossil fuel per year. This guarantees 50 tons of fuel oil saved every day.
We recycle 200 million gallons of water per year. By 2020, Midas Safety will have invested over US$2 million to increase its quantum of recycled water by 17%. We clean nearly 530,000 gallons of effluent per day in-house. The treated water is then sent to a centralized government-run facility for secondary treatment before being discharged into the river for use by the surrounding communities.
Midas Safety’s paper and cardboard related initiatives will translate into saving 23,000 trees per year, resulting in 175 tons of CO2 absorbed and 2.8 million gallons of water saved.
Replacing traditional polybags with environmental-friendly options and/or weight reduction is expected to result in reduced consumption of 95 tons of plastic per annum.
Changing the World One Pair of Gloves at a Time
We use U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as guidelines and our commitment to environmental stewardship currently revolves around 4 of these goals
